Shawn discusses his book about a couple attempting to fix their relationship by spending a quiet spring in Mexico; inevitably, however, the couple gets drawn into conflict involving American college students on spring break and racial and class tensions with the locals. Shawn also discusses that the genesis of this book originates from Shawn’s experience traveling and living in Mexico with his family during the 1970s. Shawn relates that his book revolves around love, risk, internal conflict, growing up, racism, and standing up for and doing the right thing regardless of our desires. Shawn also discusses his work as a university creative writing professor at Columbia and his holistic approach to writing. The interview ends with Connie and Shawn discussing the importance of working with a good editor, and about the importance of independent publishing houses supporting new and unique writers to maintaining the vitality of American letters. |
