SAYCE, ARCHIBALD HENRY (1845-1933), English Assyriologist. He was educated at Grosvenor College, Bath, and Queen's College, Oxford. His main field was Assyrian and West Asian archaeology and philology; nevertheless, he was intimately connected with Egypt for over half a century, traveling there extensively. He spent many winters in his own boat on the Nile, copying inscriptions and the like. He also studied early Christianity. A listing of what he published in the field of Coptic studies can be found in Kammerer's A Coptic Bibliography (1950; 1969). He also edited Murray's Handbook to Egypt (1896).
