Description	Kean writes a letter to the Drury Lane Committee to decline the role of Joseph Surface in the play The School for Scandal. Kean, whose strength was drama, rejected the role because it was comedic. The Committee, which included Lord Byron, requested that he play the part because Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the author of the play, had recently died, and the Committee desired to revive his plays as a memorial. Letter contains the watermark of "Thomas & Pine 1811."

Transcription	Mr. Kean returns to the Committee the character of Joseph Surface, which he has with Surprise and Mortification received this day-- Mr. K-- wishes submissively to bring to the recollection of the Gentlemen, that the material Service he has rendered the establishment over which they preside, has been by peculiar sucess in the first work of the Drama, & he will never insult the judgement of a British Public by appearing before them in any other Station but the important one, to which they have raised him.
