My dearest Hetty
Here we are only thirty miles from Pittsburg- blocked
in by three vessels aground- and frozen besides. We
started on Wednesday twelve of clock and reached
this execrable place on Wednesday evening and
still should have had water enough to carry
us on but for an abominable Packet called the
Casket which has stretched directly across the channel.
We sent all our men on board sent them word
and did all in the power of Trojans to get them
off but in vain. Our next hope was the arrival
of a small boat which would be able either to
pass the Casket or go back to Pittsburg from
whence we could take stage to Cincinnati. One
