My dear friend - at first when I discovered that circumstances would prevent my once more seeing you & bidding you farewell, I felt very bitterly the loss of
even a leave taking meeting with you but ere long I thought it was better upon the whole that needless words expressive merely of material separation should
not pass between those who like ourselves shall surely remain united in spirit hence forward - I should have liked well to have expressed once more to you my
heartfelt gratitude for all your friendship & kindness to me - for the consolation which my intercourse with you & your family has afforded to my sorrow -
especially for the support & strength which it has been my priviledge to derive from your exhortations when so often I have carried to the house of God a
heart wrung with
Miss Hall that I placed in Mr. Butler's hands testimonials from yourself Mr. Gerhard & Mr. Meredith to the effect that I never in any way slandered her
reputation - I should feel some satisfaction in knowing that whether she chose to receive it or not the truth had been offered to her upon these matters -
