My dear Madam
The intelligence of 'Mr
Combe's death fills me with sadness;
and yet at this distance I can scarce
-ly regard it as real -that he whose
mind & tongue & pen had for so long
a period of time commanded the
respectful attention of the philosophic
world, and the highest admiration
of his disciples and friends, has at
length ceased to speak &write; and
that we shall no longer be rendered
wise by his wisdom, nor be made
better by his moral teaching.
As a philosopher, he led me, as
an enlightened & good father lead.s
his child, and at a distance,
rendered great by his transcend
