May 17th 1882 My dear Mr. Pateman I have much pleasure in Engaging Mrs. Pateman and yourself to support Mr. Edwin Booth during a tour of Great Britain upon the following conditions. Mrs. Pateman to play the Entire leading business and provide a suitable Wardrobe. Yourself to combine the Stage Management and play all the principal and low comedy and character parts. In consideration of the above I agree to raise Mrs. Pateman's name in all Bills Programmes and Advertizements, and undertake that with the exceptions of course of Mr. Booth, no other Artiste's name shall be so starred. I also agree to pay the cost of all Railway travelling from and to London 2nd class, and a Saloon passage whenever it is necessary to travel by water. The combined Salary for yourself and Mrs. Pateman to be Thirty-five pounds per week. The season to commence on or about the 5th of next September and terminate on or about December 10th.
