William Poel letter to Reginald Pole, 1926 November 9

              85 Howard's Lane, Putney. London, S.W.15 England. Nov 9th 1926. My dear Regie, I wrote you a letter last Friday (Nov. 5th) about my play ""The First Franciscans"" in which I told you that I had parted with the disposal of American acting nights to Percy Burton, but on the understanding that he should make his first offer to you because I thought that if you could secure the play you will not only have a very good acting part but also a play in which you might repeat the success you had made with the Christmas play. So Percy Burton then agreed that the first  offer should be made to you of £250 cash down for out and out X of the American Setting might without further conditionas or limitations. And we both wrote out to you on Friday Nov 5th the two letters which you will receive next Monday. But on writing my letter to you it occurred to me that you might not be in a position to pay down so much as £250 at a short notice, and so I supported you making an offer to Percy Burton of £150, and here I should have added, ""provided you were prepared to pay besides a small royalty on the gross receipts of every performance."" My omission to add this additional clause to the new terms propsed by me, was due to my not having yet discussed the matter with W. Burton whose acceptance, as I told you , of any new conditions would be necessary. I have now given him a copy of my letter that I wrote to you P.T.O.
