Title	Cover, The Absolute Truth
Description	Octavo, soft-cover pamphlet (bound in brown carton material, marked by water-staining), with stapled binding. Unpaginated; glossy print. No author or publisher listed. Includes 30 full-page black and white photographs from mostly unidentified European campaigns, battlefields and medical stations during World War I, presumably emphasizing conflicts involving American soldiers, which graphically depict the human casualties of war. Titles for each image briefly and often allegorically refer to scenes in the photographs, providing minimal or no context. No publication date (though photographs likely were taken circa 1917-1918). Most photographs have the caption "U.S. Official" printed below the image; eight were stamped "US Signal Corps" prior to publication. One, titled "Fractured Bones", closely resembles a WWI Army Signal Corps photograph captioned "Nurses and their Patients, Carrol-Dakin Ward, France" available through the US Army Heritage and Education Center.

Notes	This unrelentingly grim series of photographs is in stark contrast to the brightly colorized postcards featuring European cities and panoramic views in the Frankel Collection, many of which pre-date World War One. Several sources identify the publisher of this pamphlet as the U.S. Signal Corps, but its name and official insignia appears only on eight photographs. Significantly, some of the most stark, close shots of cadavers do not have the tag line "U.S. Official". Speculation exists as to whether this was an internal or unofficial publication. Potentially, given the terrain, duration and military personnel depicted in these images, most if not all these photographs could potentially have been taken during the months long Meuse-Argonne Offensive (September to November 1918) in France.
