Title	Easy money in mining stocks
Creator	Chandler, N. A. (1818-1880)
Description	Chandler writes that he has “cleared six thousand dollars on the rise of stocks within the last month, mostly in the Lady Bryan.” He doesn’t “feel like going to Mass or any other Black Republican state while the war is going on.” He encourages Jane to come west with the children, offering to pay their way. Notations in pencil on the first page at the top read: “Easy money in mining stocks, Hard knocks for ‘Old Abe’ and his abolition war.” Pencil marks highlight certain parts of the text pertaining to the title.

Transcription	Virginia Feb. 8th 1864 Dear Wife, I received yours dated Dec.31st today. I am sorry you have not received the letter I mailed Nov.12th with fifty dollars & pictures enclosed. I had it registered, and think you may [receive] it yet as we received no mail here for two or three weeks on account of the roads being blocked up with snow east of the rocky Mountains, It is reasonable to suppose you, last have encountered the same difficulty I have been up here about ten days I am well and making money in Stocks very fast I have cleared six thousand Dollars on the rise of Stocks within the last month mostly in the Lady Bryan I have about 300 shares of the Lady
