Dear Wife,
Since I wrote you last I have been over the mountains to Virginia City, [illegible] I went by via of Nevada which is a hard road to travel we found the snow on sumit in some places ten feet deep the rivers high & plenty of mud I found the times at Virginia rather improved The Indians have been driven from their strong places The volunteers have taken the first Battle ground and recovered several of the distinguished Bodies who were slain in the first Battle and brought in and Buried about forty They had lain on the field and were all striped and mutilated by the Indian and ravens so it was very difficult to recognize many It was about four weeks before they could take the old field several have been killed in the last battle among them Capt Story a very fine man. He was buried at while I was at Virginia under military and Masonic honours. We expect more trouble with the red men and Gen Haven and Col Jack Hayes came over with me for the purpose of organizing a force under U.S. Government to take over and give them all a whipping
