Title	Lincoln's hirelings
Creator	Chandler, N. A. (1818-1880)
Description	Chandler writes that he expects to sell soon, and that “the mines here are proving very rich especially about Gold Hill and Virginia and that one would hardly know the place now as one year ago.” He also writes that “Governor Nye is here” and that they have an election for organizing the Territory and sending a member to Congress to “put Lincoln’s war policy men to flight.” Chandler adds that “many men have left for the East to fight, mostly for the South.” Notations in pencil on the first page at the top read: “Anti-war Sentiments ‘Lincoln’s hirelings’ and their ‘destructive policy.’” Pencil marks highlight certain parts of the text pertaining to the title. This letter does not indicate the year, but the year must be 1861 because it references the organization of the Nevada Territory. The first election after the organization occurred on 31 August 1861, or as Chandler wrote, “next week.”

Aug.25th Dear Wife, I have received yours dated at Westford and enclosed was Willies, I had not received any letters from you for six weeks I was glad to hear from you & all the folks. at the same time the letter containing the Death Lucian no doubt he is better off now than he was here with us in this unhappy wourld I have been well as usual this summer. I have neglected writing on account of the uncertainty of staying here long but as things now look should not be able to get away within the next two months. I am doing as well as I expected with my mineing ground and expect to sell soon but I have considerable money due
